Help choose the artwork for our shade sails

When Stony Rise Village opens in Devonport in mid 2027, the carpark shade sails will carry original artwork by two Tasmanian artists. We want the community to help choose it.

Allan Mansell and Adele Auchterlonie have each created two designs. We’ll use one design from each artist, and your vote decides which.

Allan Mansell

Allan Mansell is a Plangermaireenier artist and printmaker who works as Black Ant Art. His work tells stories of land, sea and the creatures in them. Allan also created the artwork for the shade sails at Spring Farm Village in Kingston.

Trading

This design is Allan’s view of the trail to Devonport, and every set of footprints leads to the port. On one side are bull kelp, mutton birds, whales and shellfish. On the other are gum leaves. The work links ancient Aboriginal tracks with the pathways we walk today.

Gathering of Food

This design shows the Devonport lagoon and the wildlife that depends on it. Aboriginal people have long gathered food there. The work is a reminder to keep this place healthy and productive.

Adele Auchterlonie

Adele Auchterlonie paints memory maps. Earlier this year we asked locals to share their memories of Devonport and the surrounding area, and many of you did. Adele read every one, and those memories are now part of her designs.

Life Along the Mersey

This is a map of the Mersey you could almost follow. It runs from Bluff Beach and the lighthouse to the Spirit of Tasmania, and takes in the caravan park, the mushroom toilet and more along the way.

Somewhere Familiar

This is a looser, more open take on Devonport’s bushland, river and wildlife. It draws on the Don River track, the old railway and the big red train at the Bluff. It leaves room for you to find your own memories in it.
